What does ‘learning’ mean to you? A teacher standing in front of a silent class, droning on in a monotone while you discreetly try to sleep in the corner? Bueller… Bueller… Bueller…
Well those days are long gone and educators now understand that engaging students is one of the most critical steps required to facilitate meaningful learning.
When Kaleidio designed the Discovery Centre for the Knox Consortium of Schools at the Knox Innovation Opportunity and Sustainability Centre (KIOSC), we created a system that coordinated multiple inputs, displays and computers that only came to life when being used by a group of students. Every different group created a different experience and outcome.
We were confident that students would be engaged by the surround-sound, touch-screens, projections on the ceiling and walls, as well as cutting-edge decision-making tools to play with.
We were delighted to see that the technology enabled students to move beyond their physical reality and into a new virtual reality, where the use of shared tools in a common space created a very tangible community. Decision-making became a communal responsibility, with technology acting as a catalyst for awakening a deeper understanding about what it means to work together and be together on our planet.
